Bridgewell celebrates 50th anniversary
LYNNFIELD-Bridgewell, a leading provider of services for the developmentally and psychiatrically disabled, recently honored Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, Kitty Dukakis and Salem Five Bank President & CEO Joseph Gibbons at its 50th anniversary celebration at the Seaport Hotel. More than 300 people attended the event.
Michael Dukakis, who served three terms as governor from 1975-1990, was recognized for his staunch support of better living conditions and opportunities for those with disabilities. Many of the individuals in Bridgewell’s programs today moved into community settings as the result of the Dukakis administration’s commitment to deinstitutionalization.
Kitty Dukakis is a longtime advocate for those affected by addiction and depression, and her openness and candor over the years about her own afflictions have served as an inspiration for others. She has also been an outspoken supporter of women’s rights and the environment.
Under Gibbons’ leadership, the Salem Five Bank Charitable Foundation has enabled Bridgewell to expand its housing programs and range of services. The bank has been a strong partner with Bridgewell in providing funds for various projects.
“At Bridgewell, our motto is connecting people with possibilities,” said CEO Bob Stearns. “People like Gov. Dukakis, Kitty Dukakis and Joe Gibbons have played a significant role in assisting us in achieving a high degree of success in meeting our mission.”
Founded in 1958, Bridgewell provides services in the areas of residential, day habilitation, homelessness and employment training as well as recreational and adult educational opportunities. Bridgewell provides supports to 3,000 individuals at more than 100 sites in 18 communities in Essex and Middlesex counties. Its offices recently moved from Lynn to Lynnfield.
